Ayurveda

with Jessica Ewart

One on One Consultation

What to expect:

Initial Visit

Ayurveda deeply respects and considers the individual constitution of each client. Your first visit will usually take 60-90 minutes but may take up to 2 hours. We will begin with a dosha questionnaire to determine your Prakriti as well as a Q&A that evaluates the Ama (imbalance or disease) in your body. Ayurvedists also perform a pulse reading and an examination of the face, eyes and tongue. The knowledge we acquire through these exams and questionnaires will dictate how we proceed in terms of prescribing dietary recommendations, herbal therapies, meditative & pranayama (breath work) techniques, physical exercise (such as specific yoga postures) and also aromatherapy, etc.

After the standard exams, we will discuss any immediate health concerns or complaints. Typically, we will prioritize your symptoms according to severity and suggest therapies to relieve the most acute problems. Frequently, clients find that addressing the most serious issues will also resolve the minor aggravations in due time.

In Ayurveda, we recognize an inseparable link between the body and mind. Often, emotional releases may occur as we discuss and examine physical ailments. During our visits, clients are encouraged to discuss and explore the connections between illness in the body and distress in the mind. You will not be rushed or treated in a dismissive manner during our consultations. The office environment is peaceful, stable and non-judgmental.

You will leave this appointment with a detailed nutrition plan as well as suggestions for simple lifestyle routines that will enhance your overall health. In circumstances where imbalance is causing disease symptoms, you may also be given herbal formulations to take as prescribed.

Follow Up Visit

Depending upon your particular situation, subsequent visits may be preferred to chart progress. In Ayurveda, we seek to resolve the most severe discomforts at first and address more minor issues after the major ones have subsided. That being said, your initial visit may produce results that eliminate your serious ailments and follow up visits can allow us to work toward complete balance by addressing the lesser discomforts in your body and mind.

In cases of serious imbalance, an ama-reducing diet is often recommended for up to 40 days before the client begins panchakarma (removal of ama through 5 different methods). The initial consultation may result in prescription of this special diet (tailored to the individual) and followed up with specific panchakarma treatments depending upon the type and severity of symptoms.

Counseling

Jessica is trained in Ayurvedic Psychology and Yoga Therapy. Using meditative techniques and pranayama (breath work), we can work together to explore the sources of stress and emotional anxiety in your life. Mental stress is a proven contributor to many physical ailments including auto-immune disorders and cancer. By healing the psychic wounds, we can often achieve better physical health and well being.

Counseling sessions are offered in a relaxing and friendly atmosphere. Ayurveda does not advocate a lifetime of dependence on outside resources. Rather, we work with the individual towards self-empowerment. Our therapeutic sessions will offer you the tools to begin living an awakened and liberated life, without the weight of past injuries holding you back.

Life and Wellness Coaching

with Becky Dempsey

One of the best strategies for affecting lasting change is having a life coach. I say this from personal experience and success with my own life coach.  Without a doubt, it is one of the best things I have done for myself and I am so excited to bring my Yoga and wellness experience to my own coaching practice.

Coaches are there to see the things that are holding you back and that you might not bet able to see yourself.  Every great athlete has a coach.  Not because they are better than the athlete, but because they see things from a different prospective and can assist them in making critical changes that were out of their vision.  A coach sees the sabotaging behaviors that you may not be aware of and helps you redirect them.  Most of us want to make changes, to grow and evolve but we can’t seem to make it happen.

If you are ready to make a commitment to change I will assist you in creating a plan that is in line with your vision and dreams.  Failure doesn’t happen overnight.  Many little actions lead us to a path of sadness and regret.  In the same light, little actions can have huge results!

Call to schedule your Complimentary coaching session now and take that little action to Choose Your Life Now!

I am both coached and trained through Anthony Robbins Companies, the world leader in the coaching industry.

If you came to this page because you’re at the threshold of something new and unsure about your next step, I couldn’t be more excited for you! Many people draw back from the edge and miss the opportunity to grow. It is when we push beyond the edge of our comfort zone that life begins!

Life and Wellness coaching is a proven approach to affecting positive change. My personal style of coaching is guided by the the leading figures in the field and draws on a substantial background in Yoga, healthy living and a life-long journey of personal growth and development. If you’re ready to join me on this journey, we’ll work together to build a plan around goals that lead to a life of Your choosing.

About me:

I lost both parents early to diseases that could have been prevented by diet, movement and an awareness of the effects of stress on the body. Their deaths — along with my mother’s long drawn out illness — both broke my heart and frightened me. As I tried to understand what happened to my mother and break a generational pattern of catastrophic health in my family, I ran across a book that profoundly changed my life — Dr Andrew Weil’s Spontaneous Healing. Sitting in my backyard on a beautiful spring day, reminiscing about my parents and watching my year old son play, I began to read…and the fear of winding up like them started to fade.

That spring day was the beginning of my life-long journey into wellness. It wasn’t long after that I turned my personal Yoga practice into a career and had the privilege of founding Chattanooga’s first studio with a good friend and colleague. During the following few years, I studied with many of the nation’s best Yoga teachers — including Rodney Yee, Erich Schiffman, Brian Kest and Doug Keller — as my personal and professional practices flourished.

It was a taped seminar of Anthony Robbins, the father of the coaching industry, that changed my life again. It took a few years for his message to settle in and for me to fully appreciate how well it works in the context of Yoga and healthy living.

Both Yoga and coaching have profoundly changed my life, teaching me how to fully and passionately live it. I am forever grateful to the teachers who have guided me along the way and for those who are currently in my life. As I continue my education as both a Yoga teacher and life and wellness coach, I will bring to you the most current and relevant work in both fields.

I have studied and practiced Yoga since the early 1990’s and co-founded Chattanooga’s first Yoga studio, ClearSpring Yoga, in 1998. Currently I direct the Yoga program for the Sports Barn Clubs and teach small and private group classes through out Chattanooga. I coach from the comfort of my favorite space — my home office — working with woman to assist them in living passionate and joyful lives. I continue my Yoga education and work with my own coach.

Yogassage and more…

with Madia Swicord

Yogassage is a form of bodywork that incorporates assisted yoga asanas (poses) and therapeutic massage techniques. I combine stretching and tissue manipulation. Degrees of client participation varies from passive to full involvement. Techniques used in yogassage is similar to Thai Massage yet quite different.

Yogassage sessions can be tailored to the individual, soothing aching backs or joints, releasing tensions in busy muscles, or invigorating the circulation of the body and awareness of the mind. It can target certain muscle groups, and encourages the deepening of postures and the release of unhealthy body holding patterns. It can incorporate joint mobilization, breath work, and hand skills, or simply a passive system of stretching. It has been used by athletes and non-athletes alike to aid in physical and mental well-being.

Who Am I

I am a teacher and therapist with a wide range of expertise and experience. I am a licensed and skilled practitioner that has many years of combined experience and training to provide personalized care for optimal health, improved functioning, and rejuvenation. I continually enhance my skills through ongoing advanced training and practice a wide range of techniques and modalities in order to effectively and positively impact a client/students health.

I am utilizing my  B.S. degree in Psychology and Exercise Physiology with over 15 years of experience to offer you the best mind/body therapies possible.   I began studying Mind/Body philosophy at age 16 by reading the book “Biology of Hope” by Norman Cousins, MD.   He coined the term “psycho-neuro-immunology:

I received my first teaching Certification in Hatha Yoga from Lex Gillan and later received a Certification in Vinyasa Flow Yoga and YA-200 from Stephanie Keach.  I have taken workshops with Ranjani Cobo, Bryant Kest, Shiva Rea, Doug  Kellor and many others.   My strongest influence  has been Ashtanga Yoga and have always found the importance of mindful breath and alignment within the flow…. a blissful aspect of the yoga experience.

I have also been a Licensed Massage Therapist since 1995 and am AMTA certified.

I Created and Managed “madia’s studio” from 2000-2010 and after having a child, decided that  managing employees was no longer of interest to me and was not where I wanted to expend my energy.   It is such a pleasure  to be in private practice again to bring all my experience and attention into a laser beam focus on my clients and students.

My Inspirations

Bamboo is one my inspirations for optimal health because of its integration of complimentary qualities. As an ancient saying goes: Be like bamboo. It is strong on the outside and soft and open on the inside. The stem stands freely in the wind and bends, it does not resist. What bends is harder to break.

We are at our healthiest when we integrate complimentary qualities: strength and resilience, with yielding and ease. Massage and yoga can help to foster this dynamic, healthy balance.

Thai Yoga Bodywork

with Jeff Atkins

Integrative Bodywork with Jeff Atkins, weaves together soft tissue therapies found in Eastern traditional medicine and Western medicine.

definition:  a synergistic blend of manual (hands-on) therapies drawing elements from movement based bodywork, Thai Yoga Massage, Neuromuscular Trigger Point Release, Alexander Technique, Myofascia Meridian Release,  and deep breathing techniques for releasing connective tissue constrictions.

methods:  deep measured breathing;  moving and sustained compressions;  yoga-like positions and asanas; passive stretching;  deep tissue release; identifying tender areas and corresponding referred pain sites.

benefits:  reclaims pliability to stiffened and constricted soft tissues;  releases habitual postures; improves performance for athletes, musicians, artists, & speakers;  enhances yoga practice; reconnects body and mind.

The sessions are customized to assist individual needs and concerns.  Breathing & movement techniques bring about physical and mental release.

Sessions are conducted on a padded mat on the floor or adapted for a massage table.

Private studio and home sessions available.

Prior to Session:

* eat lightly (preferably 2 hours prior to session)

* wear yoga gear or comfortable loose fitting clothing

* socks may be needed, as your body temp naturally lowers during bodywork

* remove all jewelry

* inform of medical / health condition, particularly of muscular & skeletal history and current condition, during your Postural Analysis.

during the session:

* breathe deeply & rhythmically; receive occasional prompts to take a “deep breath”

* communicate if pressure is too much or too little – express any discomfort

* focus on body sensations to bring your mind to the present moment

* allow periods of silence, clearing mind, and allowing your body to adjust

* there will be a period of silence at the end of the session

techniques:

Thai Yoga Bodywork (TYB)

The foundational elements of each session are based on the Lotus Palm™ method, by Kam Thye Chow.  The benefits of this method relates to the adaptation of traditional Thai massage to the Western body.

Traditional TYB may include aspects of ancient Indian healing systems of Ayurveda.  One component operates on the theory of sen Lines.  The theory of sen is often referred to as energy lines. Rhythmic hand pressure is applied, using palms and thumbs, to specific points along the sen lines.  Assisted yoga with active and passive stretches.

Trigger Point (TrP) Therapy for Myofascial Pain Syndrome

Myofascial Pain Syndrome (or MPS) is a term used to describe one of the conditions characterized by chronic, and in some cases, severe, pain. It is associated with and caused by trigger points (TrPs), which are localized and sometimes extremely painful contractures (‘knots’) found in any skeletal muscle of the body. The symptoms can range from referred pain through myofascial trigger points to specific pains in other areas of the body.

Relief for TrPs and associated referred pain sites is achieved with compression and friction the of the affected areas (Progressive Compression Technique).  Neuromuscular Therapy techniques may be used as well.

Breathwork

Breathing is not an intellectual activity.  Through life’s circumstances, habits, illnesses, and physical activities, our automatic breath becomes restricted and distorted. Deep breathing techniques and guided breathwork bring immediate progressive results, relieving connective and soft tissue tightness and pain patterns.

Essential Attunement

Deep relaxation and energy balancing techniques, reawakening the body-mind’s innate ability to balance stressful and compromised states. (Can be a complete 1 hour treatment excluding Thai stretching.)

Incorporating energy awareness practices such as Reiki, Thai Sen Palpation, Trager,  Comfort Massage™ and sensory-motor techniques.  Essential oils may be used to expand benefits and encourage relaxation.

Balancing your Body with Acupuncture

Have you ever felt “stuck,” or that something in your body just seems out of balance? Our bodies are indeed a dynamic, constantly shifting landscape of energy. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, good health is dependent on the free flow of this vital energy we refer to as Qi. A blockage or stagnation in the proper flow of Qi may lead to pain, dysfunction, or disease. In fact, illness is seen as simply an imbalance in the body’s energy. Acupuncture needles are used to unblock any obstructions along the meridians through which this energy flows, restore the regular flow of Qi, and renew health.

What can Acupuncture treat?

In the last few years, acupuncture has been in the news with promising studies regarding the treatment of such conditions as chronic pain, high blood pressure, fibromyalgia, migraines, back and neck pain, anxiety, insomnia, and infertility. Other conditions ranging from digestive to musculoskeletal to nervous and circulatory issues are commonly treated with acupuncture. Acupuncture is also a wonderful therapy for the prevention of disease. Each treatment is determined by the patient’s unique makeup and history.

Your Acupuncturist

Yong Oh is a licensed acupuncturist (L.Ac.) He obtained a Master of Science in Acupuncture degree from the Pacific College of Oriental Medicine in New York City, and is a board certified acupuncturist by the National Certification Commision for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM). He has a clinical background which includes training and practice in both Chinese as well as Japanese styles of acupuncture, experience at a vibrant Chinatown clinic in New York City, and has studied at the Wang Ju Yi Center for Clinical Channel Theory Research in Beijing, China. In addition to his work with Chinese Medicine, his other primary interests lie in Zen meditation and Buddhist studies. Yong is dedicated to exploring that vital connection between the body and mind through both acupuncture and meditation. He believes that acupuncture is a powerful modality for physical, emotional, and spiritual healing and growth. With a special interest in treating psycho-emotional related issues including stress, anxiety, IBS, insomnia, and depression, he provides a compassionate approach toward allowing the individual to find balance and health in their lives. Yong holds a B.S. degree in Biology from Virginia Tech University, and an A.A.S. degree in Graphic Design from the Parsons School of Design. Outside of his practice, Yong enjoys hiking, reading in coffee shops, travelling, and the NY Mets.

Rolf Bodywork

with Will Massey

Original Ida Rolf method of Structural Integration

About Structural Integration

Structural integration is a system of soft tissue manipulation founded by Dr. Ida Rolf, Ph. D., which works on the connective tissue (muscles, tendons, ligaments, and fascia – the structure that surrounds muscles) and is designed to restore the body to its healthiest and most efficient alignment. By creating length and manipulating the connective tissue Structural Integration works to establish more alignment in the body and a more sustainable and efficient working unit.

Why do people seek Structural Integration?

· Relief of chronic pain such as: back pain, neck and shoulder pain.

· Recovery from injuries, accidents, surgeries, and trauma.

· Release of posture conditions such as scoliosis or general poor posture.

· Relief from chronic tension and stress.

· Repatterning of work-related repetition such as desk work or driving.

· Improve performance in athletes, yoga, martial arts, dance, and any physical activity.

Ida Rolf Quotes

“Structural Integration is a system that induces change toward an ordered pattern.  It aims to balance the myofascial relationships within the body.  When the body becomes more aligned through Rolfing, the posture can become taller, straighter and free from chronic pain. A body that is more balanced and aligned with gravity, the lower its entropy and the greater its energy content. Rolfers believe that we need to look at and address the body as whole rather than separate parts.”

“This is the gospel of Rolfing: When the body gets working appropriately, the force of gravity can flow through.  Then, spontaneously, the body heals itself.”

“To me, the most important thing is not a specific Rolfing hour; it’s the progression from hour to hour.  It’s the way you prepare in the second hour for the third hour so that you can get the results of the third hour.”

“Rolfing is permanent.  As one student put it, after you’re Rolfed you’re like a Jaguar. No matter how long you drive a Jaguar, it’s not going to turn into a Ford.  That’s a very good emotional answer.  It’s beautiful because it appeals to all levels.”

“A Rolfer must be able to be comfortable with phenomena which are always shifting, always moving.  This is what makes things tough.  Those few people who can build a body up are the few who have sensitivity to this sense of security in insecurity.  We’ve really given The Wisdom of Insecurity a physical component.  When you come right down to it, that wisdom of insecurity explains what Rolfers are talking about- it’s the body’s need for quick adaptation.”

All Quotes by Ida Rolf are from: ROLFING and PHYSICAL REALITY By Ida P. Rolf, Ph.D. and ROLFING: Reestablishing the Natural Alignment and Structural Integration of the Human Body for Vitality and Well-Being by Ida P. Rolf, Ph.D.

Will Massey practices the Ida Rolf method of Structural Integration in Chattanooga TN.  Will is certified by the Guild for Structural Integration in Boulder, Colorado. He is a licensed bodywork therapist. Will has a BS in Anthropology with a minor in Psychology from Appalachian State University.
